Superintendent’s MESSAGE.... Dear United ISD Parents/Guardians:

Whether you are a returning family or new to United ISD, we warmly welcome you the 2018-2019 school year. The number of campuses in our district continues to grow, and this year we are opening the doors to three new campuses built under the auspices of the Bond 2013 project. Those campuses include the J. B. Alexander 9th Grade Campus, Raul Perales Middle School and San Isidro Elementary School. Throughout the year we also expect to see great progress on the construction of Lyndon B. Johnson’s High School’s 9th Grade campus, the Elementary #30 at Cuatro Vientos/Lomas Del Sur. The summer months have been a busy time for United ISD teachers and administrators who have been preparing classrooms, lesson plans, and projects that will lead to another successful and productive school year. The first day of school for all United ISD students will be on August 15, 2018, and this Parent ConnectionBack to School Edition is designed to serve as a guide for you and your child. I respectfully ask that you take a few minutes to review the valuable information contained within in this publication. Should you have any questions about any of the information in this guide, please contact your child’s campus administrator or our administrative offices. I also ask parents to pay close attention to the information that your child brings home for your review. Also, please complete and sign all forms that require a parent /guardians signature, and return them promptly to the school.

I hope that each of you enjoyed a relaxing summer break in the company of friends and family. I am looking forward to the start of the new school year, and our administrators, principals, teachers, and counselors are working hard to prepare their campuses for the first day of school on August 15, 2018. I am particularly delighted that United ISD will open the doors to three new state-of-the-art campuses in time for the forthcoming school year. At present, our work crews are putting the final touches on the new Alexander 9th Grade Campus, San Isidro Elementary School, and Raul Perales Middle School. As always, United ISD has wonderful opportunities ahead to make a difference in the lives of all students. At United ISD, student achievement remains our highest priority, as we continue to increase our students’ growth in their learning through meaningful and direct collaboration with teachers, counselors, and their

I believe our students deserve a bright future and a lifetime of success. As Superintendent of United ISD schools, I will continue to maintain high expectations for our faculty with the understanding that continued collaboration between colleagues, administrators and parents is at the core of helping our students reach their goals. In closing, I would also like to emphasize the value of community involvement as it pertains to student success and security at our campuses. I urge parents to establish lines of communication with their child’s teachers, and ask them to communicate suspicious activity at school or on social media to a United ISD Administrator or the United ISD Police Department. Attention former United ISD students who were unable to successfully complete graduation requirements: If you entered Grade 9 before the 2011-2012 school year, and did not pass one or part of one of the state assessments (TAKS, TAAS) after attempting it at least 3 times, you may be eligible to graduate now. Nurses across the district have seen a rise in students carrying their own medications. To ensure that all students are kept safe, it is United ISD’s policy and proactive approach to prohibit any student from carrying any kind of medication, prescribed or over the counter, without proper documentation from a physician licensed to practice in the state of Texas. Medications students are not allowed to carry are, but not limited to the following: Cough drops, any chewable medications, throat sprays, etc. Students who have pre-existing medical conditions that require a school nurse to administer medications are encouraged to proactively communicate their needs to school personnel prior to the start of the school year to ensure that all the proper documentation is submitted on time. In addition, all over-the-counter medications must also be labeled so the nurse can administer the medication to the child. Parents are responsible for keeping school personnel up to date and informed of any potential allergic reactions to medications or foods, and any medical conditions.

Since United ISD policy prohibits students from carrying their own medication, it is very important to have a physician licensed to practice in the state of Texas complete all district Medical Administration Forms needed for campus nurses to administer the medications, whether prescribed or over the counter. Children, whose doctors recommend they carry their medications due to a preexisting condition, will need to pick up a Self-Administration Medication Release Form from their school and have their physician’s office complete the form. After having a doctor complete all the necessary paperwork parents will need to bring in the medication in a properly labeled container. For prescription medication, it is recommended that the pharmacy label accompany the medication. All physician orders must match the orders on the container of the prescribed medication. Only when all of the proper documentation is received will school nurses administer or allow students to carry and self-administer their medications. These practices are set to protect all students. It is our effort to ensure that students’ needs are met while maintaining a safe and positive learning environment for all.

SECONDARY

The affidavit will be valid for a two-year period. The child, who has not received the required immunizations for reasons of conscience, including religious beliefs, may be excluded from school in times of emergency or epidemic declared by the commissioner of public health. Medical exemptions are allowed as are exemptions for active duty members of the United States armed forces.

Provisional: “All immunizations should be completed by the first date of attendance. The law requires that students be fully vaccinated against the specified diseases.” A student may enroll in school provisionally, if the student has received at least one dose of each specified age-appropriate vaccine. In order to remain enrolled the student must complete the required subsequent doses of each vaccine within 30 days from enrollment. “If, at the end of the 30-day period, a student has not received a subsequent dose of vaccine, the student is not in compliance and the school shall exclude the student from school attendance until the required dose is administered” according to the Texas Department of State Human Services.

San Isidro Elementary School is a sprawling 104,445 square foot single story building. It will serve approximately 950 students in 45 classrooms, 16 of which are PK classrooms. The school entrance incorporates a manned security station at the entrance. The four corners of the school are anchored by a Library, Computer Labs, Cafeteria, a Multi– Purpose Gymnasium, and a stage area for school events and meetings. The campus also has a dedicated Science Classroom and Music Room, along with a central Courtyard which will house an outdoor amphitheater / teaching laboratory.

The J. B. Alexander High School 9th Grade Campus is a stand-alone two story building with a detached FFA building totaling 201,346 square feet with a maximum capacity of 1,200 students. The campus has 30 classrooms, six science lecture labs, six Health and Science Magnet Labs, and an Introduction to CTE Magnet Lab. The Fine Arts area houses two-art labs and a dance studio, while the Athletics and P.E. share a competition and practice gym with easy access to the outdoor fields. The cafeteria section accommodates 600 students at a time, and provides access to an outdoor dining area. There are also two common areas for students within the academic wings and a library. The campus security is reinforced at the perimeter of the building with a guardhouse, and all visitors have to be cleared for entry via a staffed vestibule located at the front entrance of the campus.

Raul Perales Middle School Middle is a two-story 110,050 total foot building designed to accommodate 1,000 students. It is organized by a central mall between a wraparound classroom wing on one side and school assembly spaces on the other. The campus has twenty-seven classrooms, four Science Labs, two Computer Labs, two Special Education Classrooms, an Art classroom and a Home Economics classroom. The Fine Arts Wing features a Band Hall, Ensemble Room, Rehearsal Room, five practice rooms, and a 10,340 square foot Gymnasium furnished with weight and dressing rooms. The building entry is outfitted with a security station-which will allow District police to monitor traffic into the building. The school will also has an ample camera surveillance system to observe student and visitor activities.

2019 League of Legends Program Announced

At United ISD, learning and success go far. As such, the United Independent School District would like to recognize extraordinary alumni whose achievements exemplify the values and the foundation that their high school education has contributed towards their success.

United ISD continues to honor Distinguished Alumni. United ISD will begin to accept nominations for the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Class from October 1, 2018 through February 1, 2019. If you know of any outstanding United ISD Alumni please submit their nomination to the Office of the Superintendent. CRITERIA: An alumni who is being nominated for the award must have graduated from a United ISD High school at least 5 years from date

of nomination. This recognition can be earned by demonstrating, outstanding service to our country, community or to others in need; also for achieving recognition, having made exceptional contributions to his/her profession or career; and lastly for philanthropy, those who have made significant contributions in their field/community; and/or to any worthy cause.

Members of the community may nominate an individual who fits the criteria. The individual making the nomination shall submit details/ resume about the individual including the achievements of the individual. Perfect Attendance Program Continues for all Students Student success begins with daily school attendance. This is why United ISD will once again be implementing its “Every Day Counts” perfect attendance incentive program for the upcoming school year. Any elementary and middle school student, who works to attain perfect attendance every six weeks, can be eligible to win prizes at their respective campus.

All students at an elementary or middle school are eligible to be entered for the grand prize drawing at their campus if he or she has had perfect attendance (no excused or unexcused absences) for the entire six weeks period starting with the 1st six weeks period (in all classes). Additionally, students at each high school will have a perfect attendance incentive as well. ACCESS TO TEXAS ASSESSMENT The Texas Education Agency has announced the launch of the Texas Assessment Student Portal, which is designed to provide students and parents with online access to a student’s state assessment scores. This portal will assist a student and his or her parents with tracking assessment information throughout the student’s academic career. United ISD sent an email to all parents of children in grades 3 – 12 on June 18, 2018 (access codes for their children) results were sent to the email submitted during registration. United ISD invites parents to log on to learn more at: www.texasassessment.com. Parents who do not have access to a computer or did not receive an email with this information are urged to contact with their child’s school. The portal provides scores from the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), STAAR Alternate (includes STAAR Alternate 2), the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS), and the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). TAKS-Alternate scores are not available through the Student Portal. Page 20

Updating of Security Systems and Procedures in United ISD

United ISD is committed to providing a secure and safe environment for students and staff, and has taken additional measures to enhance safety throughout the District. The District’s technology department is updating security stations at all campuses with the installation of state - the -art access controls, video surveillance, and key card reading systems for perimeter doors. These systems will be controlled and monitored by the United ISD Police Department.

In addition, District police and security guards will monitor and control the flow of visitors via security portals located at all main (front), entrances. The build-out of the security portals and installation of key card technology were funded by School Bond 2013. Furthermore, all visitors will be required to present a current and valid i.d. (driver’s license/ state issued i.d. or other official document). Visitors will be also screened with the RAPTOR electronic visitor management system, and may be subject to additional screenings or bag checks as deemed necessary by campus security or police. Once cleared, all visitors will be required to report to the main office for a final check in.

Progress on security portals and key card entrances: • Employee key card entrances and security portals are fully functional at all United ISD elementary schools. • Employee key card entrances will be activated at all high school campuses in time for the 2018-2019 school year. • Remaining key-card entrances will be built-out and activated at all remaining United ISD middle schools during the course of the school year.

United ISD Enhances Security Throughout the District

In an effort to enhance security measures, United ISD has incorporated additional practices and resources throughout the district. The 2018 Standard Response Protocol (SRP) Manual is the District’s latest initiative to uniform district response to a crisis or emergency. This program is complete with a set of preset plans, commands, and responses to critical incidents that may arise during the school day. The five simple commands, encompassed in the manual and featured in the poster below, make it easier for students and staff to understand their role and expected response to and during an emergency. The goal of providing students with a standardized approach to safety is to minimize anxiety and confusion during an emergency situation. By standardizing the response and actions taken by campus personnel, law enforcement can respond using the same plan, the same language, and what actions will be taking place for each type of emergency that may occur. The key to SRP is that there are simple commands used throughout the program between students, staff, and first responders using common terminology which allows everyone to operate and respond in a coordinated manner. Each action has specific set of instructions on what to do if you find yourself in a crisis and each action is followed by directives on how to achieve that. The District understands the importance of keeping parents informed on what measures are in place within our schools. Be a Parent Si gn up tod ay! Research shows that when parents get involved in their child’s educational endeavors, the more likely they will achieve higher grades in school and graduate. This is why United ISD highly values parental involvement and encourages them to be an approved parent volunteer at their child’s campus. Approved parent volunteers can go on field trips with their children and their classmates, help out with class events, and even coach sport teams offered by the Boys and Girls Club. Parents also have the liberty to volunteer whenever their schedule permits. In order to be a parent volunteer at United ISD for the upcoming school year, all parents (returning and new) are required to complete an application and clear a no-cost background check that is provided by the District. Additionally, new applicants must provide proof of a recent T.B. test. Applications for parent volunteers can be printed out for completion by visiting www.uisd.net and clicking on the “For Parents” section. Applications may also be picked up at school campuses or at the District’s Admissions/Attendance/Drop Out Recovery Office located at 201 Lindenwood Drive. The application process for the 2018-2019 school year begins on August 1, 2018, and new applications are valid thru July 31, 2019. The extended end date gives parents an opportunity to assist with summer activities as well. Parents who volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club must also be cleared with United ISD. Parent Portal is a secure and direct program where parents can access student schedules, track grades, and monitor student attendance. It’s like a daily progress report for your child that you can access anytime. We want to encourage all parents to register for the program by completing a simple Parent Portal Registration Form at your child’s campus. Once this has been received, the district will email you a password and you’ll be set. Upon receiving access to the Parent Portal program you’ll be able to retrieve the site from United ISD’s homepage and save it to your favorites so you can access it, anytime and anywhere you want. El número de escuelas en nuestro distrito va en aumento y este año abriremos las puertas de tres nuevas escuelas construidas con fondos del Bono Escolar 2013. ACCESO A EVALUACIÓN DE TEXAS La Agencia de Educación de Texas ha anunciado el uso del Portal del Estudiante para Evaluaciones de Texas (Texas Assessment Student Portal), el cual ha sido diseñado para brindar a estudiantes y padres de familia acceso en línea a las puntuaciones de los alumnos en las evaluaciones estatales. Este portal ayudará a los estudiantes y sus padres a revisar la información de los exámenes durante la carrera académica del alumno. El 18 de junio, United ISD envió un correo electrónico a todos los padres de alumnos en grados de 3ero a 12do. También se enviaron códigos de acceso para los resultados de sus hijos al correo electrónico que proporcionaron durante el proceso de inscripción. Para más información, el distrito invita a los padres de familia a ingresar al portal www.texasassessment.com. Exhortamos a los padres que no tengan acceso a una computadora o que no hayan recibido el correo electrónico con esta información a comunicarse a la escuela de sus hijos. Los padres voluntarios autorizados pueden acompañar a los alumnos y a sus hijos en excursiones escolares, ayudar en los eventos del salón y entrenar a los equipos deportivos del Boys and Girls Club. Los padres también tienen la libertad de ser voluntarios cuando sus ocupaciones se los permitan. Para convertirse en voluntarios de United ISD para el próximo ciclo escolar, se requiere que todos los padres (de estudiantes actuales y de nuevo ingreso) llenen una solicitud y que aprueben la revisión del historial criminal que brinda el distrito sin costo alguno. Además, los solicitantes nuevos deben entregar prueba de un examen reciente de tuberculosis. Las solicitudes para ser padres voluntarios pueden imprimirse ingresando a la página www.uisd.net y presionando el enlace de la sección “For Parents” (para padres). United ISD cuenta con el Programa Portal para Padres como una herramienta de comunicación adicional que facilita la interacción entre padres de familia y escuelas. El Portal para Padres es un programa seguro en donde los padres pueden tener acceso al horario, calificaciones y asistencia escolar de los alumnos. Es una especie de informe de progreso diario de sus hijos al que pueden tener acceso en cualquier momento. Exhortamos a todos los padres de familia a inscribirse en este programa llenando el Formulario de Inscripción del Portal para Padres en la escuela de su hijo. Una vez que la escuela reciba dicho formulario, el distrito le enviará un correo electrónico con su contraseña. Al tener acceso al Programa Portal para Padres podrá ingresar desde el sitio de United ISD y grabarlo en sus páginas favoritas para que lo pueda utilizar a cualquier hora, desde cualquier parte. Atención ex-alumnos de United ISD que no cumplieron satisfactoriamente con los requisitos de graduación:

Si ingresaron a 9no grado antes del ciclo escolar 2011-2012 y no aprobaron una o parte de una de las evaluaciones estatales (TAKS, TAAS) después de intentarlo al menos 3 veces, ahora podrían ser elegibles para graduar. Una nueva ley estatal permitirá a los alumnos que hayan terminado satisfactoriamente todo el curso de trabajo recibir su diploma de preparatoria.

United ISD mejora la seguridad en todo el distrito

Anuncian Programa Liga de Leyendas 2019 En United Independent School District, el aprendizaje y el buen desempeño te llevan al triunfo. Por consiguiente, el distrito reconoce a los ex alumnos extraordinarios cuyos logros ejemplifican los valores y la base en los cuales su educación de preparatoria ha sido parte fundamental.

United ISD continúa rindiendo honor a sus ex alumnos distinguidos. El distrito iniciará su proceso de nominaciones para el Programa de Ex Alumnos Distinguidos 2019, del 1 de octubre al 1 de febrero de 2019. Si conoce a algún ex alumno sobresaliente de nuestro distrito, por favor presente su nominación en la Oficina del Superintendente.

CRITERIO DE SELECCIÓN: Los ex alumnos nominados deben haber graduado de una preparatoria de United ISD al menos 5 años antes de la fecha de nominación. Este reconocimiento se puede obtener al demostrar haber otorgado un servicio extraordinario al país, comunidad o a personas necesitadas; haber hecho aportaciones excepcionales en su profesión, así como por filantropía.

Los miembros de la comunidad o del comité de selección pueden nominar a personas que cumplan con este criterio. Las personas que presenten la nominación deben entregar un resumen/ información sobre el Nominado, incluyendo sus logros. La información debe incluir referencias (documentación escrita o referencias personales) que verifiquen su(s) logro(s).

Continúa programa de Asistencia Perfecta en primarias y secundarias El aprovechamiento escolar estudiantil empieza con una asistencia perfecta. Por este motivo, United ISD implementará nuevamente el programa de incentivos por asistencia perfecta “Cada día cuenta” el próximo ciclo escolar en primarias y secundarias, así como el Programa “Never Be Absent” en preparatorias. Todos los estudiantes de primaria y secundaria que tengan una asistencia perfecta en cada periodo de seis semanas pueden ser elegibles para obtener premios en su respectiva escuela. Todos los alumnos que asistan a primaria o secundaria son elegibles para participar en el sorteo de grandes premios que se lleva a cabo en su escuela, si tienen una asistencia perfecta (sin una ausencia justificada o injustificada) durante un periodo de seis semanas, iniciando con el primero (en todas las materias).

Además, los alumnos de cada preparatoria también obtendrán un incentivo por asistencia perfecta. En el Programa “Never Be Absent”, los estudiantes que tengan una asistencia perfecta tienen la oportunidad de participar en el sorteo de un viaje a San Antonio con todos los gastos pagados, el cual incluye una estancia de cuatro días y tres noches en J.W. Marriot San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa, cuatro pases de temporada para Fiesta Texas y cuatro pases para el cine en el teatro IMAX de Santikos Palladium. Esto se lleva a cabo junto con el Programa “Kia in the Klassroom” de Sames, en donde un estudiante de preparatoria puede ganar un auto nuevo Kia. La importancia del protocolo SRP es que consta de preceptos simples que se utilizan en un solo programa entre alumnos, personal y servicios de emergencia al utilizar terminología común que permite a todos operar y actuar de manera coordinada. Este programa es una serie de proyectos, preceptos y acciones en casos de emergencia que puedan surgir durante el día de clases. Los cinco sencillos preceptos que se incluyen en el manual y que aparecen en este cartel, facilita a los estudiantes y personal saber lo que tienen que hacer durante una emergencia. El objetivo de brindar a los estudiantes un enfoque único para resguardar su seguridad es minimizar su ansiedad y confusión durante una situación de emergencia. Administración de medicamentos recetados Las enfermeras del distrito han visto un aumento en los estudiantes que llevan sus propios medicamentos. Para preservar el bienestar de todos los alumnos, la política de United ISD y un enfoque proactivo prohíben que los estudiantes traigan consigo cualquier medicamento, recetado o de venta libre, sin la debida documentación de un médico autorizado para ejercer en el estado de Texas. Los medicamentos que no se permiten que los estudiantes lleven consigo son, pero no se limitan a los siguientes: pastillas para la tos, cualquier medicamento masticable, aerosoles para la garganta, etc.

Se exhorta a que los alumnos que padezcan una enfermedad médica pre-existente que requieran de la administración de un medicamento por parte de la enfermera escolar, comuniquen de manera proactiva sus necesidades al personal antes de iniciar el ciclo escolar para asegurar que toda la documentación requerida se presente oportunamente. Además, todos los medicamentos de venta sin receta médica también deben contar con una etiqueta para que la enfermera pueda administrar dicho medicamento al menor. Los padres son responsables de mantener al personal escolar actualizado e informado de las posibles reacciones alérgicas a medicamentos o alimentos y cualquier padecimiento médico.

Debido a que la política del distrito prohíbe que los alumnos lleven consigo sus propios medicamentos, es muy importante que un médico autorizado para ejercer en el estado de Texas llene todos los formularios de administración médica del distrito requeridos para que las enfermeras escolares lo administren, ya sea recetado o de venta libre. Los estudiantes, cuyos médicos recomienden llevar consigo los medicamentos debido a una enfermedad médica pre-existente, tendrán que recoger en su escuela un formulario de Autorización para la auto-administración de medicamentos y llevarlo con su médico para que lo llene. Después de que el médico haya contestado la documentación necesaria, los padres necesitan llevar el medicamento en un recipiente debidamente etiquetado. Se recomienda que los medicamentos recetados traigan la etiqueta de la farmacia donde se adquirieron. Todas las órdenes de los médicos deben coincidir con lo escrito en el envase del medicamento. Solamente cuando se hayan recibido todos los documentos requeridos, la enfermera escolar administrará o permitirá que los alumnos lleven consigo sus medicamentos para su auto-administración. Se establecen estos requisitos no solamente para proteger a su hijo, sino a todos los estudiantes. Es nuestro esfuerzo asegurar que se cumpla con las necesidades de los alumnos mientras se mantiene un ambiente de aprendizaje seguro y positivo para todos.

El estudiante puede inscribirse en la escuela de forma provisional si ha recibido al menos una dosis de cada vacuna pertinente para su edad. Para continuar inscrito, el alumno debe recibir las dosis posteriores requeridas de cada vacuna antes de 30 días a partir del momento de su inscripción. “Si al final del periodo de 30 días el estudiante no ha recibido las otras dosis de la vacuna, no cumple con los requisitos establecidos y la escuela lo excluirá de asistir a clases hasta que se apliquen las dosis requeridas”, de acuerdo con el Departamento de Servicios Humanos del Estado de Texas.

Los estudiantes que se rehúsen a vacunarse serán inscritos si todos los documentos están en regla, incluyendo el examen de la tuberculosis.
