Byzantine cross finds home in Glendale

A

6th-century bronze pectoral cross that many people believe has healing powers has found a permanent home at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Glendale. Anson Williams, a veteran film and television director who also played “Potsie” on the television series “Happy Days,” discovered the Byzantine cross, which features a face of Christ encircled with a crown of thorns, while browsing the wares of an antiques dealer. “The simple beauty of this ancient cross spoke to me,” says Williams. “My appreciation of the cross as a piece of art was soon overcome by a very real sense of something powerful when I held it in my hand.” Others shared that experience. “Many people who held and touched the cross described

to me that they experienced something very powerful, from relieving physical pain to feeling an indescribable, transcendent peacefulness come over them,” said Williams. “Someone began calling it the ‘Healing Cross.’ The name stuck, because that’s exactly what it is.” Williams began looking for a religious community that could serve as a suitable home for the cross. He found St. Mark’s Church through a Facebook connection with one of its members. Designer and sacred art expert Rhett Judice created a reliquary that would protect the cross while still enabling faithful viewers to touch it, said the Rev. Mark Weitzel, rector of St. Mark’s. “We felt it was absolutely necessary that individuals could actually touch the cross while viewing it and offering their prayers and personal devotions.” The cross is available for viewing and devotion at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 1020 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale. ?

Hillsides, a foster care and family service agency, will celebrate 100 years of serving children and their families in the Pasadena area. Founded in 1913 as the Church Home for Children by Episcopal Church Deaconess Evelyn Wyle, its focus gradually shifted from caring for orphans to caring for abused and abandoned children. Renamed “Hillsides,” the independently-operated agency has continually broadened the scope of its services until it has become a respected institution offering special education, crisis intervention for at-risk families, advocacy for foster children and theraputic healing in both residential and community-based programs. One of its newer projects is Youth Moving On, a residence for young people who have “aged out” of the foster care system, but need support as they take on the challenges of adulthood.

The Gooden Center: Treating addiction Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012 is the Gooden Center, a Pasadena-based treatment center for adult men struggling with addiction to alcohol or drugs. Founded as the Gooden Home in 1962 by a group of Pasadena residents led by Bishop Suffragan Robert Gooden of the Diocese of Los Angeles, the center offers residential and outpatient treatment, as well as family therapy and continuing support. It has been led for the last 20 years by the Rev. Bud Williams, Episcopal priest and executive director. The center helps guide men of every faith, or no faith, and their families in overcoming addiction. ?
