Business Center Tijuana, B. C.

The site location is in Tijuana’s downtown area. The area is about mixed-uses such as having a liquor store on the first floor and housing on the second floor. Some of the other uses are small medical centers or dentists’ establishments. The majority of the lots are body work establishments. The site itself can be seen as a connection point between the San Diego border region and downtown area Tijuana. Programmatic elements become crucial in the design process because the existing building is going to be used as parking space, and then other program elements required for the business center will start to evolve. So, the existing building on site will become a parking lot. In addition to it, the platform on the second level will be used for multiple spaces such as meeting rooms and a concert hall. The program evolves vertical connecting to the existing infrastructure, so that will leave a platform space to start generating events within the platform. The vertical architecture becomes a landmark in the urban landscape and horizontality of the canopy along the site becomes a unifying piece of the programmatic elements, such as the tower, concert hall and the actual existing building.

Housing + Community Center Tijuana, B. C.

The site location is in Tijuana, and it is part of the Laureles Canyon region, which has an extension of approximately 3 miles. The site has been changing through time, and all these variations have been for different factors. People have used it as a dump field. Nature has been shaping the site through erosion. The topography has suffered changes, and it has evolved in response to nature. The program involves housing and a community center. The study of pure form growing out of the topography was the starting point to develop a relation between space and site. The concept started taking as a basis the topography and selecting a grid that was imposed over the topography. This grid was not restricted to the site because it extends out of the site parameters. The arbitrary analysis of the grid imposed on the topography created a diagrammatic plan view of spaces. The final diagram had to be transformed into a 3D model for further spatial analysis. The alteration of the model is a constant process to explore potential spaces. The intention of the project is to give the community a different way of experiencing space by producing an abstract geometry that will provoke people to feel a desire to experience it. This project implies a new possibility and inspiration towards a better way of living. Enclosed and open spaces organized in different levels are shaping the building according to the topography.
