Benjamin Banneker We are about to read “Benjamin Banneker,” a nonfiction selection that describes the life of Benjamin Banneker, a scientist and mathematician who lived in the eighteenth century. He was the first African American to publish an almanac. Banneker also worked as a surveyor to plan the city of Washington, D.C. He taught himself by reading books and learning from the educated people around him. People in ancient times studied the repeating patterns the sun and stars made in the sky to determine seasons and understand when to plant crops. These star patterns are called constellations. After your child has finished reading “Benjamin Banneker,” complete the following activity together. With the help of the Internet or the library, help your child write some facts about any three constellations. An example has been completed for you. Constellation

Ursa Major
Description Ursa Major means “great bear” in Latin. This constellation can be seen throughout the year in the northern hemisphere.
Selection Vocabulary Your child will study the following vocabulary words in the upcoming week. Please review the meanings of these words with your child: skill—ability to do something; colonies—settlements formed by people who have come to a new land; astronomy— the science of studying the universe outside of Earth’s atmosphere; positions— places where things are located; site—location, place to build; capital—where the government is located.

Benjamin Banneker Vamos a leer “Benjamin Banneker”, una selección no ficticia que describe la vida de Benjamin Banneker, un científico y matemático que vivió en el siglo XVIII. Fue el primer afroamericano en publicar un almanaque. Banneker trabajó como agrimensor en la planificación de la ciudad de Washington, D.C. Banneker fue un autodidacta que leía libros y aprendía también de la gente educada que tenía en su entorno. En tiempos antiguos, la gente estudiaba los recorridos repetidos del sol y las estrellas en el cielo, con objeto de determinar las estaciones y la mejor época para los diferentes cultivos. Cuando su hijo(a) haya terminado de leer “Benjamin Banneker”, usted quizás quiera completar la siguiente actividad juntos.
