April 30, 2018 Dear Families: You are probably aware that your child’s school, Lincoln Middle School, has been taking steps to improve following its designation as a Persistently Struggling or Struggling School. As part of this process, your school will be reviewed by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) on May 8-9, 2018. The review team will focus on Family Engagement. This review will count as one small piece toward your school’s accountability standing. Feedback from families is an important part of the review process. You are invited to share your thoughts on Family Engagement at your school during Parent Focus Group interviews. The focus group sessions will be led by reviewers from NYSED. We hope that you will be able to participate in the interview at one of the times listed above. Your perspective is an important part of this review and will help NYSED understand how parents think about Family Engagement at the school. Translation services will be offered subject to availability. During the group interview session, all parents will be asked a variety of questions related to Family Engagement in an open setting. Parents are encouraged to answer honestly; there are no right or wrong answers in these discussions. While there could be an opportunity for individual conversations with the reviewers depending on the size of the group, the reviewers are most interested in hearing from the group as a whole. This will help NYSED better understand the typical parent’s experience, rather than the unique experiences of individual parents. Parent responses will not be shared with the school, and no personally identifiable information will be shared with the school administration or in a final report. Feedback from parents will only be used in developing the review team’s conclusions. We look forward to meeting with you.
