El pelotn de ejecucin apunta a Wilhelm Wakonigg , el empresario que haba sido cnsul honorfico de Austria y Hungra en la capital vizcana durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. En los inicios de la Guerra Civil, Wakonigg haba protagonizado el ms famoso caso de espionaje que se ha producido en el territorio controlado por el Gobierno Vasco. El historiador Jos Luis de la Granja afirma: El juicio del Tribunal Popular que tuvo mayor resonancia, por afectar a dos diplomticos extranjeros, fue el llamado caso Wakonigg, que sirve de muestra para valorar la justicia ejercida por dicho tribunal. Este libro reconstruye por primera vez con rigor este histrico caso de espionaje, siempre a partir de documentos de la poca que se hallan dispersos en archivos vascos, espaoles, alemanes y austracos. El autor, con un pulso narrativo ntidamente periodstico, relata tambin cmo se cre cierta imagen de Wakonigg despus de su fusilamiento a causa de las versiones ofrecidas por el periodista britnico George L. Steer y el Gobierno de Euzkadi. En la obra queda, asimismo, detallada constancia de la actuacin de Wakonigg a favor de altos cargos falangistas y de las circunstancias que condujeron al apresameinto del ex cnsul con un maletn repleto de material altamente comprometedor. Tampoco escapan a la mirada del autor las consecuencias polticas que para el Gobierno Vasco y el PNV comport el caso Wakonigg.
