As you can see by the chart above, Garland ISD seniors lagged behind other Dallas-area students for FAFSA participation.

Team • Advanced Academics Spearheaded the “FAFSA Fun Night” events • Communications Recruited by Advanced Academics to produce printed materials to spread the word • Family Engagement Joined efforts to get the word out to district families and assist with the “fun” activities for the evening • Guidance and Counseling Responsible for the nitty-gritty; providing school counselors to help parents navigate the FAFSA website.

Process • Advanced Academics set a goal to increase the district family FAFSA completion rate by 5% • Initially, they planned to conduct FAFSA workshops at four of the district’s high schools. When they proved to be big successes, the other three high schools chose to join the fun. FAFSA fun, that is.

One of the issues that discourages families is knowing what information they need to have readily available when completing forms like this. The postcards that were designed by Communications included a list of items needed, so that parents and their seniors could focus on the task at hand.

English language postcards Postcards were produced in the three primary languages spoken by families in GISD: English, Spanish and Vietnamese. They were sent to families utilizing the home language information in the district’s student management system (Skyward). Two different mailings were done. One with the first group of four events, and then a second mailing prior to the remaining three.

Surprises • Students from all high schools attended all nights. • Number of students attending was more than we expected. • Students from outside of the district came; GISD graduates came. • Students and parents who did not complete FAFSA in one night came back to other nights to finish.

Qualitative Results • Campus staff became more knowledgeable and experienced in completing FAFSA. • Students and parents began concrete conversations about college. • Families gained comfort in approaching school personnel for assistance.

Quantitative Results • 280 students, along with their parents, attended FAFSA Fun Nights • Students qualified for over $300,000 in Pell Grants • Overall increase of 16% completions by the priority deadline

2017-18 Plans • Move Financial Aid Night to October immediately before the Fun begins • Conduct all 7 FAFSA Fun Nights during November • Offer a Fun Night in the spring to catch anyone we might have missed in the fall
