A Roman Catholic Stewardship Church Our Mission With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we, the Roman Catholic Community of Santiago de Compostela aspire to proclaim in word and action the living Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Let us Reflect...
MASS SCHEDULE:
Today we begin the season of Lent. Like Advent, it is a season of preparation. During Advent, we prepared for a joyous celebration of the birth of Jesus. During Lent we prepare for our celebration of renewal in Holy Week when we recall Jesus' agonizing, lonely death and unexpected (to his disciples) resurrection. The reading from Genesis today reminds us of what it is like to lose almost everything and then to have it restored to us. Peter takes the flood that destroyed the earth and its creatures and transforms it into the baptism by water that saves each one of us. Mark tells us that even Jesus was given forty days to prepare, not in a flood but in a desert, for what was to be asked of him. So we begin this Sunday by being reminded of the importance of preparation and that it takes many forms. Whatever form our preparation takes, we must begin.

First Sunday of Lent Please do pray and reflect how the Spirit is guiding you. Remember every gift counts no matter what amount it is. We must all participate because this is how we show our solidary with those who benefit from the pastoral work of the Diocese. To participate is to manifest to Jesus that Yes, “We are one,” with you in serving and loving your people.”
My Dearest Parish Family, Jesus was not afraid to face his absolución. Somos limpiados y se nos God be with us always. temptations presented by the devil concede la gracia de la oportunidad de la because He knew God the Father is metanoia: un cambio de corazón y mente “WE ARE ONE.” This is the theme of reflejado en nuestro estilo de vida.
JMJ
this year’s PSA Pastoral Services Appeal. It is a very simple yet profound truth. The gift of the Incarnation – birth of Jesus Christ – just a few months ago is a reminder how in a perfect manifestation of His love Abba willed that His Son be “one” with us by being human like us in every way except sin. This is an action that entirely benefits us who needed to be redeemed. Christ’s Paschal Mystery has suffered and died for our sins.
with Him. He is confident the Spirit will strengthen and guide Him. Let us not be afraid to go and participate in the PSA campaign. This is one of the many ways we can practice the Spirit of Lent. May I thank you in advance for your generous gift. God bless and take care. Love and prayers,
This is presented in a symbolic way in Fr. Thomas Paul K. Naval the deluge of Genesis a washing away of sin in a very dramatic and physical way. This I believe is also what happens when we confess our sins and we are given the absolution. We are cleansed and given the grace of the opportunity for metanoia: a change of heart and mind reflected in our lifestyle. We have just heard the words: “Repent and believe in the Gospel,” when we entered into the discipline of Lent as ashes in the form of a cross were placed on our foreheads. The invitation to believe in the Gospel is not just a matter of an intellectual assent but a to pattern our lives with that of our Lord Jesus who became one with us and is one with us in the Spirit who will be with us till the end of time. To heed the Gospel message is to take seriously our shared responsibility. The PSA Appeal is one way we make concrete our intentional discipleship by participating in the pastoral work of the Diocese. Every cent is used to support the Ministries mentioned in the PSA Video two weekends ago.
Fr. Thomas Paul K. Naval

Foreign Currency and Tithing From time to time we receive foreign currency in our Sunday collection. Unfortunately, we are not able to deposit foreign monies with our bank. We dislike to throw away currency just because it is of no use to the parish when we know it has value elsewhere, so we ask you to please refrain from contributing with foreign coin. We appreciate our parishioner’s time, talent, and U.S. treasure!
Again, this year our diocese is providing opportunities for us to share our resources through the PSA “Proud to be Catholic, Know, Love, and Serve” campaign. This annual campaign supports diocesan ministries in many ways. Please look for a letter from Father Thomas in the mail during the first week of February with information on the PSA. This year our Parish’s share of the costs of these ministries is $128,000; donations received over that amount will be returned to the Parish for our building fund needs. This weekend, February 17th and 18th we encourage you to be prepared to make your pledge and initial payment. Please prayerfully consider the amount of your pledge to the PSA. Together we are united in the Catholic faith knowing that through your generosity many people will be served. Thank you for your participation in the life of Santiago de Compostela and the Diocese of Orange.
PARISH OFFICE CLOSURE Our Parish Offices and Hall will be closed on Monday February 19th, 2018 in observance of Presidents’ Day. Stephen and visiting priests from the Abbey! After a reading about the Good Shepherd and his lost sheep, and confessing, the children wrote their names on a little white lamb and placed it upon our Good Shepherd Board for all in church to see. Please join us in praying for these children of God, about to make their First Holy Communion on May 5th.
Paul leads a mission center from Ephesus so that evangelized occurs throughout the whole province of Asia. Jews and Greeks alike became Christians and followers of Jesus. Paul’s own words in Rom. 15:18-19 and 2 Cor. 12:12 state “what Christ has accomplished through me to lead the Gentiles to obedience by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders…..”. Paul demonstrated a ministry of healing through the power of the Holy Spirit, which had its beginnings in Jesus. First Sunday of Lent
In today's first reading, we hear about God's covenant with Noah, and in the Gospel, we hear about Jesus's journey into the desert. Both the universal flood in the story of Noah and Jesus's journey into the desert lasted 40 days. These are just two examples of the biblical roots that explain why Lent lasts for 40 days. Other references to 40 days in Scripture include: • the number of days spent by Israel in the desert • the number of days spent by Moses on Mount Sinai • the number of days spent by the prophet Elijah in the desert before going to encounter God on Mount Herob • the number of days of penance of the inhabitants of Nineveh
Lenten Dinners will be taking place every Friday during Lent in the parish Hall from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Enjoy this dinner after the Stations of the Cross.

LENTEN GUIDELINE 2018 The 2018 Lenten season began on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2018 and ends with the beginning of the Easter Triddum and the celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, March29, 2018. Lent offers us the opportunity to prepare for the celebration of Easter, to walk with the catechumens preparing for the celebration of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation and for those of us who are baptized to prepare ourselves to renew our baptismal promises through penitential practices. In a particular way during Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that "remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit." The following practices are to be observed by Catholics in the Diocese of Orange in their penitential practices: 1) It is to be noted first of all that it is by Divine Law that the faithful are bound to do penance and, as a specification of this obligation by the Church, some form of mortification by those 14 years of age and older is to be observed on all Fridays throughout the year. This obligation is in itself a serious one. 2) Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. No Catholic will lightly hold himself excused from this penitential practice. If for some serious reason a person must eat meat on a Friday in Lent, some other form of self-sacrifice should be performed. 3) Everyone who is at least 18 years of age and not yet 60 is bound also to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. A) On these two days of fast only one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals on these days is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. B) Where health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. LENTEN OBSERVANCE.
Dispensation and the Lenten Fast The Lenten season calls all faithful Catholics to remember in heart and in mind the redemptive self-sacrifice of Jesus for the life of the world. From the earliest days of our faith, Christians have been called to special penance and sacrifice during not only the 40 days of Lent but especially on the significant days of the Lenten liturgical season, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday as well as all the Friday’s of Lent. In light of this, all Catholics in the United States are encouraged to enter into sacrificial penance during these days and, specifically, to refrain from the eating of meat on all the Fridays of Lent, with the added penance of holy fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. While this discipline of penance and fasting is serious, it no longer binds one under pain of grave sin. For a sufficiently good reason (e.g., a special family celebration, and ethnic festival, Lunar Ne Year, etc.), one may dispense oneself from this serious obligation and may legitimately substitute another day of the week to fulfill this penance. It is for this reason, that there is no need for a specific “dispensation” from the Bishop, lifting the penance for these days.
