«Lord, is it true that few people will be saved?»

Today, the Gospel raises the theme of the salvation for our souls. This is the essence of Christ’s message and the “supreme law of the Church” (in fact, this is also mentioned like that by the very Code of Canon Law). The salvation of our soul is an actual fact insofar a gift from God, but for those of us that have not yet crossed the threshold of death, is only a possibility. To be saved or to be damned to hell! That is, to accept or to reject God's everlasting offer of love.

Hoy, Jesucristo nos dirige nuevamente una llamada a la humildad, una invitación a situarnos en el verdadero lugar que nos corresponde: «No os dejéis llamar “Rabbí” (...); ni llaméis a nadie “Padre” (...); ni tampoco os dejéis llamar “Guías”» (Mt 23,8-10). Antes de apropiarnos de todos estos títulos, procuremos dar gracias a Dios por todo lo que tenemos y que de Él hemos recibido.

St. Augustine said «the man who self-annihilated his goodness, which could have been eternal, deserved the eternal damnation». We have only two possibilities in our life: either God or the void, for without God nothing has any meaning. In this sense, when they do not participate of the essence of God, life, death, joy, pain, love, etc., are just concepts without any logic. When the man sins, he avoids the Creator's glance to center it upon himself. God is constantly looking at the sinner with love, and in order not to force his freedom, He expects a minimum gesture of been willing to get back to him. «Lord, is it true that few people will be saved?» (Lk 13:23). Christ does not respond to this question. Therefore, it remained unanswered, just as it is today, for «it is an inscrutable mystery between the saintliness of God and the conscience of man. The silence of the Church is, therefore, Christians' only opportune position» (John Paul II). The Church does not state any opinion about those who dwell in hell, but —basing itself in Christ's words— it does state an opinion about its existence and the fact there will be many damned in the Final Judgment. And whoever denies this, whether clerical or lay, incurs, without further ado, in heresy. We are free to turn the stare of our soul towards the Savior, and we are also free to stick to our refusal. Our death will simply petrify our option forever.

Como dice san Pablo, «¿qué tienes que no lo hayas recibido? Y si lo has recibido, ¿a qué gloriarte cual si no lo hubieras recibido?» (1Cor 4,7). De manera que, cuando tengamos conciencia de haber actuado correctamente, haremos bien en repetir: «Somos siervos inútiles; hemos hecho lo que debíamos hacer» (Lc 17,10). El hombre moderno padece una lamentable amnesia: vivimos y actuamos como si nosotros mismos hubiésemos sido los autores de la vida y los creadores del mundo. Por contraste, causa admiración Aristóteles, el cual —en su teología natural— desconocía el concepto de la “creación” (noción conocida en aquellos tiempos sólo por Revelación divina), pero, por lo menos, tenía claro que este mundo dependía de la Divinidad (la “Causa incausada”). Juan Pablo II nos llama a conservar la memoria de la deuda que tenemos contraída con nuestro Dios: «Es preciso que el hombre dé honor al Creador ofreciendo, en una acción de gracias y de alabanza, todo lo que de Él ha recibido. El hombre no puede perder el sentido de esta deuda, que solamente él, entre todas las otras realidades terrestres, puede reconocer». Además, pensando en la vida sobrenatural, nuestra colaboración —¡Él no hará nada sin nuestro permiso, sin nuestro esfuerzo!— consiste en no estorbar la labor del Espíritu Santo: ¡dejar hacer a Dios!; que la santidad no la “fabricamos” nosotros, sino que la otorga Él, que es Maestro, Padre y Guía. En todo caso, si creemos que somos y tenemos algo, esmerémonos en ponerlo al servicio de los demás: «El mayor entre vosotros será vuestro servidor» (Mt 23,11).

Legazpi has a population of one million people who are served by 90 active priests and 140 religious. It serves the people through schools and special apostolates/ministries such as among street children and the mentally challenged, as well as programs to help families, youth and the poorest of the poor.  The Diocese of Legazpi has developed a five year plan to build the Christian community and serve the needs of the people. They need our financial help. Your donations will help form the clergy, religious, and lay leaders; support scholarships for poor but deserving seminarians; serve the poor and marginalized through social outreach programs; fortify ministries on evangelization, education, and the renewal of society through the promotion of justice, and peace, and the integrity of creation.
