Region Focus - D.O. Cava The Spanish word cava means cellar and it was adopted in the early days of the EU to differentiate Spain’s sparkling wines from Champagne. Most cava is made in the Penedés region of Catalonia and production centres on the town of Sant Sadurni d’Anoia near Barcelona. Region Focus - D.O.Ca. Priorat Priorat is located south of Barcelona in Tarragona and is one of Spain’s most acclaimed D.O. regions. It has superior status of D.O.Ca. along with Rioja. Priorat shot to fame (and fortune) in the 1990’s after a group of winemakers teamed up to make red wine around the remote high-lying village of Gratallops. They were particularly attracted by the slate and schist soil, which imparts distinctive flavours on the wine. At their best Priorat wines show incredible concentration and merit bottle ageing to reach their peak.

Tim Atkin - MW 'Chairman’s Choice’ Stepping outside the UK! Compartir in Cadaqués. Run by two ex-El Bulli chefs, making some of the most creative food in Empordá. Café Suizo in Haro. Haro’s best tortilla and a great bar for some pre-winery visits breakfast. Casa Bigote in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The best place to eat seafood in Sherry country. Els Barrils in La Escala. My local wine shop when I’m on holiday. Packed with goodies. Bar Lobos in London. Noisy, bustling and lots of fun. My favourite London tapas bar.
Beth Willard - Direct Wines José Tapas Bar – this is as authentically Spanish as you can find outside of Spain. I love how small it is, the tiling, a great list of wines by the glass, and super tapas. Lobos at Borough Market is fun. I love that it is tucked away under the bridge (and also close to the flagship Laithwaite’s store so in handy walking distance!). Really great meat and croquetas. Bar Pepito/Camino at King’s Cross. Sherry. Nothing more to say!

Sarah Jane Evans - MW My top choices fall into four categories: ‘very old favourites’: Cigala (the first, and still going); ‘old favourites’: Bar Pepito, Cambio de Tercio, the Camino chain (especially for its wine lists); ‘recent favourites’: Trangallán, Drakes, the new Barrafinas, Hispania, Iberica, Ametsa (excellent service). And finally there’s the new category to watch, the Spanish chefs arriving/ arrived this year: Eneko at One Aldwych and Street XO. You’ll notice that among the favourites, there are a number of places where I can be sure to find a quick, fresh Sherry on tap, a key priority!

WINES FROM RIOJA
SPAIN’S FLAGSHIP WINE REGION Think Rioja and what does the word conjure up? For most of us, Rioja is synonymous with crowd-pleasing reds packed with sumptuous strawberries and a dash of vanilla oak – a perfect accompaniment to a leisurely tapas lunch under the Spanish sunshine. And yes, Rioja does deliver on this like nowhere else, but did you know that Spain’s flagship wine region also produces a wealth of whites, rosés, and reds in styles to suit any palate? Sitting comfortably among the world’s most food-friendly wines, there is a Rioja style to suit almost any dish and any occasion. The Rioja region is home to over 600 wineries and here, the Tempranillo grape is king, producing reds and rosés in an array of styles, with a signature strawberry aroma. This is supplemented by Garnacha (known as Grenache in France) which provides warmth and ripe fruit flavours to blends, Graciano bringing attractive perfume, and Mazuelo and Maturana Tinta, which give structure to the wine. White wines range in style from fresh and zesty wines to traditional styles aged in barrel for many months – and sometimes years – providing a distinctive and complex wine with a golden hue, and nutty dried fruit character. When buying red wines, look out for the words Crianza, Reserva, or Gran Reserva on the bottle. These words relate to how long the wine has spent ageing in barrel and bottle, and give an indication of how the wine will taste. Rioja wines typically spend an extended period ageing at the winery, meaning that they are released ready to drink.

Crianza wines spend at least two years at the winery, at least a year of which is in barrel. These wines are benchmark Rioja wines, with flavours of strawberry and cherry underpinned by sweet spice – perfect with an array of flavoursome tapas dishes. Reserva wines are among Rioja’s highest regarded. These are structured wines, aged for at least three years, with a minimum of one year in oak. Their complex flavours and elegant structure make these wines the perfect partner for flavoursome red meat – think lamb shanks and fillet steaks. Gran Reserva is Rioja’s most traditional and longest aged style, spending at least five years ageing before release. Complex and mature, these wines display fresh and dried fruit flavours intertwined with spice and balsamic notes. These are true special occasion wines and demand a rich and complex dish – game birds are a particularly good match here.
