During eight years on our community school district’s governing board this has happened: 1)

Current AZ Merit “B” Graded District which is fabulous for our socioeconomic conditions and rural challenges

2) Voted by the Arizona School Board Association: School Board of the Year in the State of AZ 3) Voted by the Arizona School Board Association: Superintendent of the year 4) Very competitive with teacher and staff pay 5) No school closure during Red for Ed 6) New $107,000 K-8 Reading Curriculum. It is rare for school districts our size to spend that type of money in today’s scarce resources environment. That is a testament to our district’s budgeting. 7) Rural Teacher of the Year for Pima County 8) Back to back student leaders of the Flowing Wells High School (where we send our kids) ROTC program which is 300 strong and 2nd largest west of the Mississippi. That’s a testament to our great students and teachers! Martin F. Hudecek – Altar Valley Elementary School District No. 51 My name is Martin Hudecek and I have been a part of the Three Points community my entire life. Living in Three Points is one of the reasons that, I believe, has made me successful in my life. I had the honor and privilege of attending Mary E. Dill Elementary and Altar Valley Middle School during my younger years. When it was time for high school I attended Flowing Wells High School. It was a big change going to school in the city but coming from Altar Valley Middle School I was beyond prepared for the challenge. I graduated and went on to attend Pima Community College for a few years pursuing business management. I ended up learning a trade and became a plumber. After many years of hard work, I am now the Operations Manager of one of the largest plumbing companies in Tucson. I know that I got where I am today because of the things I learned from the people in our community, the ones that gave their time and energy to be a positive influence in our community. I feel strongly that it is my turn to continue that tradition. I am married to a strong and amazing woman. Together we are raising six children. Three of them are currently attending Robles Elementary School. One is attending Altar Valley Middle School. One has already graduated from Altar Valley Middle School and is now attending Flowing Wells High School. Our Youngest will be attending Robles Elementary in two years. Making sure that our kids are prepared for the world that awaits them is a huge priority. Continuing the strong education background that our community offers is key to our children progressing in life. If selected for the position of school board member I will do my best to ensure that this is a priority for all of our children in our district. My history in this community and the commitment to ensure our children's future is what makes me confident that I am the right person for this position. I am currently on the School Board and have had the opportunity to help make many improvements to our school, not only for the children but for the amazing men and women that we trust to teach our children. Updating the books and software to provide up to date information was one of the huge steps we were able to accomplish this year. Promoting our 8th graders off to high school was one of the many highlights this year. This has been my first year as an appointed board member. I would like to return as an elected board member. In just the short time I have attended many training seminars that have really solidified in me how important this position is. When elected not only do I plan on continuing to strive for excellence in our schools but also plan to learn and continue my ability to serve our community in a positive way.

Fue un gran cambio ir a la escuela en la ciudad, pero viniendo de la escuela intermedia de Altar Valley yo estaba más allá preparado para el desafío. Shanee M. Page – Altar Valley Elementary School District No. 51 My name is Shanee Page and I have lived in the Three Points community for 41 years. I feel fortunate to have attended the Altar Valley School District from First to eighth grade. I went on to Flowing Wells High school then from there I attended Pima Community College. I spent a year with Northern Arizona University and then graduated with a Bachelor’s in Social Work from Arizona State University. Professionally I have spent some time working in Behavioral Health with children and families. I feel as a professional in my field I have gained a great deal of knowledge that allows me to make decisions in the best interest of children. I am currently employed with the Tohono O’odham Nation for the Child Welfare Division. My duties are the welfare, safety, and overall health of minor children in the Department of Child Safety. I work closely with the court system to insure all Nation laws are followed and executed. I am married and we have four children. My children attend or have attended the Altar Valley school district and I am proud that they all have been accepted into the National Honors Society. Education is a very important part of our family’s upbringing. My husband and I stress the importance of education and how it directly relates to their future. I enjoy living in my community and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. I feel very fortunate to live in Altar Valley and all the friends I have made over the years. I enjoy children and have been no stranger to taking care of my own and others. I also enjoy visiting the school and taking time out of the work week to read to them, judge a young chef’s competition, or listen to a teacher or staff on issues and triumphs. As an advocate for children and families, I am confident that I am the right candidate for this position. I have worked closely with my fellow board members and administrative staff over the past four years and will continue to do so going forward. I will continue to communicate my commitment by being available to school staff and constituents whenever needed. I will continue to promote and attend Arizona School Board events and conferences to make myself more knowledgeable and a more informed board member. I will also continue to attend all of the many district celebrations and promotions of our students. As a board member I strive to be a highly engaged community member that has the district and the students as the number one priority. I believe the momentum the district has created in involving more parent s will be very beneficial for all our students. I believe this district is thriving due to great leadership and the care the district has for the community and the students. I am proud to be an Altar Valley School District board member, community member and parent.

Louis Johnson Louis Johnson is seeking election to the Baboquivari Unified School District Board. In his professional pursuits, he has worked in law enforcement, was an attendance and school resource officer at the Baboquivari Unified School District and served the Tohono O'odham Nation's Health and Human Services and Education Departments. Louis has served on the Tohono O'odham Nation Legislative Council, as a member of the Arizona School Officers Resource Association, National Association of School Resource Officers and the Tohono O'odham Nation Regional Partnership Council of First Things First. He is focused on education, health and the environment. He was a member of the Tohono O'odham Nation Head Start Policy Council and brought Peace Builders to the local schools. Louis is skilled in volunteerism, program services, advocacy and public policy. He is well-known in the community with a strong knowledge of the Tohono O'odham language and culture. Louis looks forward to fostering collaboration between the Baboquivari Unified School District, the state of Arizona, Federal Government and the Tohono O'odham Nation in addressing the many obstacles and opportunities in a child's life.

John Lewandowski – Marana Unified School District No. 6 I have had the great opportunity to serve on the Marana School Board consecutively for the past twelve years and also during the years from 1983-1990. Many times during my tenure as a board member, I was privileged to serve as both President and Vice-President. Public Education has been an important part of my life and also my family’s life. My wife and I retired from careers in public education. Our three children all graduated from MUSD and all three are currently publicschool teachers. My two daughters teach in MUSD. My two oldest grandchildren recently graduated from MUSD, and my youngest grandson attends elementary school in MUSD. It is very evident that public education and the Marana Unified School District are near and dear to my heart, and I am proud to be a part of the MUSD family and the Marana community for many, many years.

After serving in the military, I decided that I wanted to be a teacher and eventually received a B.S. in Education, a M.A. in Education Administration, and an Educational Specialist Degree with an emphasis in Special Education Administration and alternative programs. My experience in classroom teaching was in first through twelfth grades, in both special and regular education. I also taught History/Government as a part-time faculty member of Pima Community College. I served as Department Chair for Special Education in a large local high school and had the opportunity to develop alternative programs for students with special needs. As part of my leadership position in an Education Association, I worked closely with school district administration and certified and classified personnel to develop and implement district policies and procedures, to problem solve, and to mediate conflict resolution. When I retired, I was proud of the fact that I held eight different certificates or endorsements from the Arizona Department of Education in both teaching and administration.

The number one priority of our school district is the students. As a Marana School Board member, I have a proven record of working collaboratively with other board members, administration, teachers, staff, parents and taxpayers in the district to ensure that our children receive the best educational opportunities. I have endeavored to keep up with new research in education and with changes in the law, both state and federal. Every child deserves to have the strongest educational foundation possible to cement their successes later in life. I believe that being a voice that advocates for the students, parents, and Marana community is a task not to be taken lightly. I hold Marana Unified School District board membership to the highest esteem, and will continue to make MUSD education my top priority.

Mark Neish – Marana Unified School District No. 6 During my career in education, I was a teacher at the secondary level for 16 years, primarily teaching U.S. History. While teaching, I also served as a coach in football and golf. I later moved into school administration for another 15 years, serving as an Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Principal. My Masters and Doctorate degrees were earned from Kansas State University. While in Marysville, KS, I was a member of the local school board and served as that district’s representative to the State School Association Governmental Relations Board. With this background and experience, you can be assured that I have an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of a school district’s operation. There is nothing more important to the success of a school district than the quality of its staff, both certified and noncertified. During my trek around neighborhoods to collect signatures to be placed on the ballot, I had numerous people ask me about my “platform.” As I told them, at this point my platform has but a single plank; to endeavor to improve the pay and conditions of all school district staff. Will this be easy; absolutely not. Is it worth doing everything possible to bring this about; yes, it is. I have the advantage of having been in other places and have seen things that do work and, probably more importantly, things that don’t work. As General Norman Schwarzkopf stated, “You learn far more from negative leadership than from positive leadership. Because you learn how not to do it. And, therefore, you learn how to do it.” I, as many people in education, have learned much that way and therefore, I know how not to do things. The Marana School District is a very good school district. However, as I always told staff members when I was in school administration, one of two things will happen; you will either get better, or you will get worse. If you think that you are staying the same or maintaining the status quo, you are actually getting worse and do not realize it. Feel free to apply the Parable of the Boiled as a metaphor for this phenomenon. Change is inevitable and necessary. All change, even good changes, create discomfort and anxiety. However, when making changes, it is imperative to do the requisite research to make sure the change is positive. Too many times, people are prone to promote change as a cure to problems that do not exist. In education, there has always been a tendency to jump on the band wagon and blindly go with “this year’s new thing.” I do not believe in that strategy. I believe in a research-based approach to problem solving and not jumping on bandwagons. In looking at organizations, it is often an excellent idea to have a fresh set of eyes on the operation. I can provide that fresh set of eyes. I would appreciate your support in this endeavor to make things better for the Marana School district.

Mark Neish – Distrito Escolar Unificado de Marana No. 6 Durante mi carrera en la educación, yo era un maestro en el nivel secundario durante 16 años, principalmente enseñando la historia de los Estados Unidos. Tom Carlson – Marana Unified School District No. 6 I have a strong desire to continue to serve the community, having served the nation as an officer in the United States Army Reserve for 30 years. I am a graduate of the University of Arizona and am an engineer with Raytheon Missile Systems. My military and civilian work experience has given me a unique perspective on the skills and qualities that children need to succeed. When I moved my family back to Tucson, I chose Marana because of its high-quality schools and my daughter graduated from Mountain View High. I care about our education system, and I want to continue to help improve it.

Over the last seven years that I have been on the Board, MUSD has improved. Our fiscal position is strong because we take a very conservative approach to our finances. We are blessed to benefit from a very high level of support from the community, as evidenced by the bond that was passed in 2014. We have used that money to build one new school, expand an existing school, and break ground on a new K-8 STEM academy. We have turned two elementary schools into computer science immersion academies and both middle schools now offer the program so that students can continue to develop in this critical area as their studies continue. We have installed solar panels on all campuses and this has reduced electricity costs by more than $500,000 per year. We spend 54% of our funding on instructional services, compared to our peer average of 53%, and our administrative costs are only 10% of our budget. Unlike many districts in Pima County, and across the state, we were able to give an across-the-board raise of 10% to all teaching and support staff this year. I believe standardized test scores and school letter grades are not the best way to measure a school district’s performance. Graduation rates, attendance rates, community support, and feedback from universities and employers provide a more accurate picture of how well we are serving our students. On all accounts, we are performing strong. But work remains to be done. Our graduation rate, at 88%, can be improved. Our attendance rate, at 94%, can be improved. We are working on implementing new strategies that will address each of those metrics. The Marana Unified School District has excellent teachers and administrators. We have focused on recruiting and retaining the best and brightest, and those who do not share the forwardthinking vision of the Board and administration have been asked to move on. The Governing Board is YOUR voice in the Marana Unified School District. I am a strong advocate for accountability and I hold myself to a very high standard. This is the standard that I, as a parent, taxpayer, and concerned member of the community, expect of any elected official. Candidates don’t often give you their personal number. With something as important as our kids’ education, I want to earn your trust to become a governing board member. As I say to my students’ parents: call me anytime and let’s work together.

This election is critical for TUSD. Enrollment continues to decline. Our classrooms are underfunded and our educators are underpaid. Technology speeds up, but our buildings are falling apart. We have far too many classrooms without a permanent teacher. Lots of the blame is on the Arizona Legislature. Yet, instead of working together to find solutions that put kids first, TUSD’s governing board puts itself above our students, prioritizing its own drama and infighting. No solutions, no accountability, no transparency and no community support.

Our kids deserve better. You deserve better. I became a teacher because I believe in every child’s potential. I go into the classroom every day, roll up my sleeves and get to work to make sure all students have what they need to succeed because every child can thrive when they have a great school. Every decision I make as an educator is based on one basic question: how can I make the students’ education better?

What if TUSD’s governing board asked the same question? As your board member, I promise you that I will keep asking that question. I’ve been a tireless advocate for students, in my own classroom and across Tucson, by working to make sure they have the tools and schools they need to be college and career ready. I value relationships in education and I create collaborative teams with colleagues and parents because our kids need us united in giving them the environment to thrive. What I do as a teacher is based on clear communication: with parents, colleagues, community members and students. With me on the board, we can finally create the TUSD that our kids need.

As someone in the classroom, who also has budget experience, I personally know the importance of putting money in the classroom where it belongs. As your board member, I’ll create a positive culture that values our whole TUSD family: bus drivers, support professionals, custodians, food services, teachers and students and their families. I’ll work with the community to build trust and transparency in all board actions. Adelita S. Grijalva – Tucson Unified School District No. 1 Dear Voter, I am a parent, a public education advocate and a native Tucsonan. I have dedicated my life to improving the quality of life in Pima County. For the last 23 years, I have had the privilege in working at a non-profit organization as the Director of Teen Court. I have worked with thousands of families as they try to insure that their child receives the support they need. Schools are the first place many look to for support and help. Insuring that support is available, is one the reasons I first ran for the TUSD Governing Board, and continues to be a driving force. As a board member, I am proud to have supported the wonderful gems in our district like free allday kinder, music and arts, career and technical education, dual-language that includes instruction in Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic and Sign (to name a few), preschool and dualcredit courses. I have worked to increase our graduation rates, better secure our campuses while increasing revenue through grants and partnerships. I am a strong supporter of #INVESTinED and have consistently voted to increase the pay to our teachers and educational support staff. I believe that public education is a great equalizer. Regardless of socioeconomic status, race or ethnicity, through effort and hard work, any student can earn a high school diploma. Living in Arizona has made it very challenging for public schools to provide the quality education our children deserve. Arizona is amongst the lowest in per pupil funding and has impacted the ability to pay our teachers the wages they deserve and to recruit qualified teachers and support staff. TUSD is proud that some of our schools have the distinction of being designated as historic buildings. Unfortunately, repairs are costly and have been deferred for years because of the over 100 million dollars that has been cut from TUSD’s budget. I believe in TUSD and I believe that our students have access to a wonderful education. I graduated from TUSD and my three children are enrolled in TUSD schools. I have been honored to serve our Tucson Unified community as a Governing Board Member and have learned I can’t be afraid to speak up, seek to understand every situation and advocate for what is best for our children and this community. Our district is over 70% children of color and I believe that my voice as an experienced leader, a parent in TUSD, an educator and a woman of color is vital to moving this district forward. Doug Robson – Tucson Unified School District No. 1 I am running for the TUSD Governing Board because I don’t want ANY child to be in a failing school. When I was a child we lived in no house more than a year and no town more than two years, so I know what it’s like to be in and out of many schools. I have been on the Cragin Elementary Site Council for 10 years and have seen the opportunities and challenges facing TUSD’s schools. To be effective, the Board needs a broader perspective and representation from the business community. I bring 45 years of success in real estate management, with an emphasis on finance, construction and customer satisfaction. I have life experience and private sector viewpoint currently lacking on the Board, and I strongly believe in public schools and our absolute mandate to do our best for all our students. We must focus on pupils, not on politics or personal conflicts among board members. I want to help the Board work together and with our superintendent to be proactive rather than reactive. To have great schools we need to attract and keep the very best principals and reward them for excellent performance. Specifically, the District should expect each principal to build and retain an outstanding team of teachers and support staff and to create a school environment that attracts families. Principals must provide the guidance and encouragement teachers need to succeed. The problem of student discipline must be addressed to so that teachers can teach in classrooms free of disruption and families feel that their children are safe. The Board must work to give our teachers the resources they need. We must be willing to reward outstanding teachers and principals through a careful system of merit pay, so that it is no longer necessary to move into administration or into central administration to get adequate compensation. We must be financially responsible. One of my priorities will be to increase funding for the schools and lessen the proportion we spend on central administration and consultants. We need to update many administrative practices and reform an administrative culture that is resistant to change. Human Resources, for example, needs a thorough review: I have heard countless stories of job applications or contracts being processed slowly or incorrectly, or applications that simply disappear without ever receiving a response. We should bring in community-based experts to evaluate how we do things and revamp procedures as necessary but also listen to our employees, who often see problems clearly and have excellent ideas for improvements. We need to encourage family involvement and increase community and business partnerships. TUSD can be turned around but it requires a strong commitment from the board. My business experience and engagement with local schools make me uniquely qualified to serve the community on the TUSD governing board. I ask for your vote on November 6.

Leila Counts – Tucson Unified School District No. 1 I am proud to be the only TUSD candidate that is a 4th generation Tucson educator, with deep roots in TUSD schools; a dedicated TUSD parent who sees how board policy decisions actually play out in our schools; a 4th Avenue business owner with the critical understanding of the link between our local economy and the quality of education in our schools; and an experienced advocate for children, families, and teachers that has fought for proper funding for our schools at the local, state, and national levels. With 20 years experience working as a teacher or counselor in public schools, hospitals and with Tucson's non-profits I have a broader understanding of the problems we face and greater perspective on finding sustainable and effective solutions to those problems. From the largest demonstration in support of public education this nation has ever seen, to unprecedented awareness and action to fix our schools, this year it is imperative that we elect proven leaders for our district that will stand alongside our educators, families and advocates to reject the status-quo and demand a better future for our children. If elected my focus will always be on the educational success and well being of every one of the 45,000 students attending TUSD; educational equity and quality for every child will be my commitment. I intend to do this by being a champion for: 1) Transparency and accountability in our budget. Begin the process of making wise and prudent budgetary decisions based on truth, facts and prioritization of our students. 2) Addressing the "Teacher Shortage Crisis" by growing the next generation of teachers starting with TUSD high school students in dual enrollment classes. As a current Pima Community College (PCC) Education Advisory Board member, I have the unique vision, knowhow and relationships to build these programs, fix our teacher shortage crisis, and graduate the next generation of TUSD teachers-unburdened by college debt! Educational leaders at PCC, The University Of Arizona, and Career and Technical Education's Dual Credit Program have stated that if I were elected and could help facilitate this partnership they would like to support this idea with both funding and strong collaborative efforts. 3) Bringing the arts, physical education, and extracurriculars back into all schools. Parents understand the importance of a well rounded education that includes these components. If TUSD hopes to fix our enrollment issues and want parents to choose TUSD schools, this is a necessary investment. It will also have the added benefits of increasing student achievement and community/ family engagement. I know TUSD is in desperate need for positive change. We need a functioning board to make that happen. It won't be an easy job, but I hope to earn not only your vote but your trust. Believing that I have that heart, dedication and expertise to bring that needed change.

De la manifestación más grande en apoyo de la educación pública que esta nación ha visto jamás, a la conciencia sin precedentes y a la acción para arreglar nuestras escuelas, este año es imperativo que elijamos líderes probados para nuestro distrito que se mantendrán junto a nuestros educadores, las familias y los defensores de rechazar el statu-quo y exigir un futuro mejor para nuestros hijos. Si eligió a mí, mi foco siempre estará en el éxito educacional y el bienestar de cada uno de los 45.000 estudiantes que asisten a TUSD; la equidad educativa y la calidad para cada niño será mi compromiso. Tengo la intención de hacer esto por ser un campeón de: 1) transparencia y responsabilidad en nuestro presupuesto. Comenzar el proceso de tomar decisiones presupuestarias sabio y prudentes basadas en la verdad, los hechos y la priorización de nuestros estudiantes. 2) Direccionamiento la "crisis de escasez de maestros" al cultivar la próxima generación de maestros comenzando con TUSD estudiantes de secundaria en clases de matrícula doble. Como miembro actual de la Junta Asesora educativa de Pima Community College (PCC), tengo la visión única, el know-how y las relaciones para construir estos programas, arreglar nuestra crisis de escasez de maestros, y graduar a la próxima generación de maestros TUSD- ¡sin la deuda universitaria! Los líderes educacionales de la PCC, la Universidad de Arizona, y el programa de crédito doble de educación carrera y técnica han declarado que si yo fuera elegido y podría ayudar a facilitar esta asociación, les gustaría apoyar esta idea con financiamiento y fuerte esfuerzos de colaboración. 3) Trayendo las artes, la educación física y los extracurriculares de vuelta a todas las escuelas. Los padres entienden la importancia de una educación bien redondeada que incluya estos componentes. Si TUSD espera arreglar nuestros problemas de inscripción y quiere que los padres elijan las escuelas de TUSD, esta es una inversión necesaria. También tendrá los beneficios adicionales de aumentar el logro estudiantil y el compromiso de la comunidad/familia. Sé que TUSD está en necesidad desesperada de cambio positivo. Necesitamos un tablero funcional para que eso suceda. No será un trabajo fácil, pero espero ganar no sólo su voto, sino su confianza. Creyendo que tengo ese corazón, dedicación y experiencia para traer ese cambio necesario.

Michael Hicks – Tucson Unified School District No. 1 Hello, My name is Michael Hicks, and I’m currently on the Tucson Unified School District #1 governing board. I am a product of TUSD and believe in TUSD and I have a vision for excellence for TUSD. My goal while on the TUSD governing board continues to focus on ensuring the best possible education for all our children, and to create a space where students, parents and tax payers voices can and will be heard. Those who know me know that I believe in full disclosure, and in bringing transparency to the Tucson community regarding the business of TUSD. It is my intention to continue to call for and listen to public input on important matters, and to encourage fresh ideas from students, parents, teachers and tax payers. It has been clear that I am not afraid to ask the hard questions that lead to the best decisions for our students and our community. I want to continue to bring fiscal responsibility to the district, while keeping student achievement at the forefront. I am confident that if we work together, we will be able to improve the TUSD experience for everyone, and provide our children with the best quality education they deserve. I may not be the polished speaker that some others might be, but I have done what I said I’ll do. I respectfully ask for your support in my re-election in order to continue the positive trajectory that TUSD has been in since my election four years ago. Thank you.

Michael Hicks – Distrito Escolar Unificado de Tucson No. 1 Hola, Mi nombre es Michael Hicks, y actualmente estoy en el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Tucson #1 Junta de gobierno. Soy un producto de TUSD y creo en TUSD y tengo una visión de excelencia para TUSD. Mi objetivo mientras que en la Junta de gobierno de TUSD continúa centrándose en asegurar la mejor educación posible para todos nuestros niños, y para crear un espacio donde estudiantes, padres y voces de los contribuyentes puedan y serán escuchados. Los que me conocen saben que creo en la divulgación completa, y en traer la transparencia a la comunidad de Tucson con respecto al negocio de TUSD. Tengo la intención de seguir llamando y escuchando los aportes públicos en asuntos importantes, y de alentar ideas frescas de estudiantes, padres, maestros y contribuyentes de impuestos. Ha quedado claro que no tengo miedo de hacer decisiones para nuestros estudiantes y nuestra comunidad. Quiero continuar con la responsabilidad fiscal al distrito, manteniendo el estudiantil en la vanguardia. Confió en que si trabajamos juntos, podremos mejorar la experiencia TUSD para todos, y proveer a nuestros niños la mejor educación de calidad que se merecen. Puede que no sea el orador pulido que algunos otros pueden ser, pero he hecho lo que he dicho que voy a hacer.
