Dear Parishioners, The summer can be a great time for families to have some fun and relaxation, with barbecues in the backyard, sports and camps for the kids, or outings to the park or the pool. It can also be a hectic time of getting the kids to these places, finding ways to keep them occupied since they’re not in school, or packing and traveling to various destinations. Might I suggest a way to counterbalance the busyness and stress that sometimes come with summer? One important way is by spending time alone daily with the Lord. Even Jesus needed to step back on a daily basis from his important ministry in order to go off alone and be replenished through prayer to the Father. We are not built for constant movement and activity; we are built for communion with God. Our adoration chapel is open 24/7, and families are welcome. What a wonderful habit it would be to start this summer of taking even ten minutes out of the day and spending it in prayer to God! And I would also suggest devoting some of your activity to service. Spending time in leisure and recreation is good and necessary, and gives glory to God; spending time serving others is life-giving and helps build His Kingdom. Loaves & Fishes is a great way for families to serve in the parish, any late afternoon/early evening, Saturday through Tuesday. Feeding the hungry in body and spirit is never a bad way to spend an evening. –Fr. Liekhus

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“IF ANYONE WISHES TO COME AFTER ME, HE MUST DENY HIMSELF AND TAKE UP HIS CROSS DAILY AND FOLLOW ME.” LUKE 9:23 We are not very good at “denying ourselves” in our society. Our current economic situation is evidence of what happens when people think they can have everything they want. Jesus calls us to set our own personal “wants” aside so that we have the resources to follow Him instead. Join us in our 2016 Stewardship efforts to use all the resources He has given to us to Grow as Disciples. Talent Directories are available on the parish website stgabrielhopkins.org or by contacting the parish office.
June 19, 2016, 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time Book of the Prophet Zechariah 12:10-11; 13:1; St Paul’s Letter to the Galatians 3:26-29 and the Gospel according to Luke 9:18-24 Jesus spent time in prayer before important events. He spent the night in prayer before he named his 12 Apostles (Luke 6:13). In today’s Gospel he prays before he foretells this future: that he will be rejected and killed but that he will be raised on the third day. Then we can go forward to the night before he was killed. He went to the Mount of Olives to pray. Prayer was important for Jesus. It needs to be important for us too. This Gospel also shows that Jesus wants to know who each one of us thinks he is. He doesn’t care much what others think, he wants to know what you think. He wants us to follow him. If we think he is just a “nice guy,” that is not good enough. He wants us to know that he is the Christ, the Son of God. And with this knowledge why wouldn’t we follow him? When he tells us what it will take to follow him—take up you cross daily, he doesn’t tell us the rest of the story. If we are willing to take up our cross daily and share in his suffering while on this earth, then we will also share in his joy for all eternity in his heavenly kingdom. WOW! For more information or to sign up for a small group contact Karen Fish at (952) 239-1949.
Reflection Questions: What is you daily prayer? Who do you say Jesus is? What is your cross that you bare along with Christ?
