Activities

ff Read Aloud

Read the book Olivia by Ian Falconer aloud. Use the illustrations and gestures to help highlight key vocabulary and create comprehensible input. Create TPR actions with students to practice the daily routines.

ff Daily Routine Chart

yy Create a chart titled, “Un día en la vida de Olivia.” Review the book with your class as you record the key daily routine vocabulary on the chart.

Mi rutina

yy Students can illustrate a daily routine on a 3X5 card individually or in small groups. Attach illustrations to your chart one by one to review the phrases. yy Highlight activities done on sunny days vs. rainy days. (Un día soleado. Un día de lluvia.)

ff Activites

yy Play an online memory game using the Calico Spanish images to match images of daily routines to the correct Spanish phrase. You will find a link to the game at CalicoSpanish.com/Level 2.

ff Rhymes

Mi rutina diaria de Carolina Marcial Dorado

y me gusta la escuela y me gusta el descanso; necesito los dos para ser hombre sabio.

A las ocho me acuesto, a las seis me levanto, por la mañana estudio, por la tarde trabajo,

Use TPR to show the daily routines. Help students differentiate between the times of days by showing the flash cards of morning, afternoon and night as you work through the poem. (You will teach students to tell time in Lesson 2.) Review by asking students questions similar to the following:

¿Me acuesto a la mañana o a la noche? ¿Cuándo estudio? ¿Dónde estudio?

Be sure to highlight the daily routine vocabulary in the poem for students. Also, encourage them to illustrate the poem using the page provided in the student activity sheet.

ff Technology Tip

Use your electronic whiteboard to create and save the Daily Routine Chart. Allow students to draw images digitally or use the Calico Spanish Gallery to drag in the images of the daily routine items.

Play the online daily routine matching game as a class (link is located at CalicoSpanish.com/Level2). Then send students home with a link to the web page so they can practice their daily routine phrases independently.

Review

Remove the illustrations from the daily routine chart. Volunteers can place the illustrations next to the appropriate phrase on the chart as a class review activity.

Activities

ff Telling Time

yy Review the poem presented in Lesson 1. Use a clock to show students the times of day mentioned in the poem.

yy Teach students to tell time in Spanish. Use the Calico Spanish “¿Qué hora es?” poster to introduce the clock and discuss how to tell time. Work together as a class to correctly read the clocks and report the time.

Mi rutina

yy Use the student activity sheets to practice telling time. Students can work with partners to practice asking the time and answering correctly in Spanish.

ff Sing

yy Sing the song Hola amigo (Basho & Friends: Aún Más, Track 9) to review greetings and times of day.

yy For a review of action verbs related to school, sing Hora de jugar (Basho & Friends: En Español, Track 5).

ff Daily Routine Chart

yy Add to your daily routine chart to fill in any missing vocabulary by imagining a simple “Día en la vida de un estudiante.” yy Use a clock with moveable hands to show times of day for each activity.

yy Illustrate each activity and write a descriptive phrase or sentence with the activity shown.

ff Daily Routine Activity

yy Students should create their own basic daily schedule and illustrate themselves at each step of the routine using the “Mi rutinia diaria” activity sheet. yy Encourage students to also record the time of day on their daily routine sheet to allow extra practice with telling time.

yy Students will work in small groups to present their daily routine chart to classmates. Classmates should ask questions to find out what time of day various activities occur. Demonstrate this activity by reading your own daily activity sheet in front of the class and model asking questions. Write sample questions on the board for students to reference during the activity.

ff Technology Tips

yy Show the YouTube video of Nico’s daily routine to help students envision the various activities they engage in on a typical school day. Find it easily at

yy Use your electronic whiteboard to practice times of day with students. Match the daily routine activities from the Calico Spanish Gallery with descriptive phrases and the correct time of day (show a clock face).
